This glove really focuses on a child's ability (or lack thereof) to squeeze the mitt shut when catching, as evidenced by the following three design points.
It has a four finger design where the pinky finger and its neighbor share a slot. This aids young, developing fingers in being able to exert more force on the edge of the glove when closing it around the ball.
Also, at the two "folding points" on the heel of the glove the leather gives way to an elastic mesh. This allows more flexibility and requires less force when closing the glove as compared to all leather.
Finally the leather itself is soft and flexible, especially in the deep pocket. You don't have to worry about breaking this glove in or softening it up in order to use it; it is fine from day one.

this glove is the BEST beginners glove on the market! I bought the 10" for my son when he was 4 and because of the flexibility and softness of the leather he was able to learn to catch very easily. He is on the verge of out growing the 10" so i bought him the ZFX 1100 (11") which he'll use next season. I bought 2 more for my daughters. The key to its flexibility is the elastic material at the heel flex points - it enables a child to very easily close the mitt. I also used mink oil to help soften the leather even further - 2 or 3 times each summer wipe on mink oil and set the glove in the hot sun. This is a great kids glove, i HIGHLY recommend it.

Looking for a better quality glove for our son, we chose the Easton ZFX1000 glove for our 6 year old. We were disappointed, he had great difficulty trying to accommodate the 4 fingered design. Not using his index finger made closing the thick leather glove difficult for him. Also due to the design, his index finger rested on the back of the pocket, rubbing against a knot in the leather lacing. It was our opinion that this might result in a sore. Rather than have him use it, we decided to just look for another glove.
